Cluster III: Multifunctional Nanostructures

The research theme of this cluster focuses on designing and developing next generation nano-structured multi-functional materials having a combination of two or more properties of ferroelectric (FE), ferromagnetic (FM), ferroelastic, and/or semiconducting materials with the objective of developing projects suitable for an Interdisciplinary Research Group (IRG) or Focused Research Group (FRG). For example, it is possible to combine ferroelectrics with spintronics NVRAM devices with memory densities better than 500 terabits per square inch. Besides NVRAM, other targeted applications will include weak field magnetic sensors, microwave communication devices, magneto-optic sensors, current and voltage sensors, ultra-sensitive pressure and temperature sensors.
